In When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, it is very unclear, at this point, who the antagonist is. My first thought would be Marcus, because he caused Sal to not want to talk to Miranda anymore. But when he punched Sal, he was only thinking of 'what would happen', which is a question Miranda has thought to herself several times. Also, they are starting to have a connection over their thoughts on A Wrinkle In Time. They start to talk about it every time they are together, and it is making me start to see a really nice relationship forming. So while Marcus punching Sal definitely got in the way of her path, it's hard for me to picture Miranda disliking Marcus, or even Marcus getting in Miranda's way in the future, which makes me believe that Marcus may not be the Antagonist.
My second guess for Antagonist is 'you'. 'You', as I like to call them, is an anonymous person that Miranda is writing a letter to. 'you' sent Miranda a letter telling her that they were trying to save someone's life, and that Miranda needed to send them a letter. Very vague. They could definitely be the antagonist because even though we have no idea what 'you' is doing to Miranda, it is clearly dangerous and causing her distress.
The last person that I think could be the antagonist is Julia. Julia used to be AnneMarie's best friend, but now Miranda is AnneMarie's best friend. Miranda thinks that Julia is stuck-up and rude, which she absolutely is. Julia thinks that Miranda is absolutely evil for stealing her best friend. So Julia is slowly trying to ruin Miranda's life, by invading all the things Miranda cares about. So when she gets a job at a little restaurant, Julia has to try and get one too. Also, Julia thinks she can boss around AnneMarie, and she gets in the way of Miranda spending time with her. All these are reasons why Julia could be the antagonist.
